Exclusive: T20 World Cup 2024 Ideal Playing 11 for Team India

Batting depth in focus as we look at the ideal playing 11 for Team India for the T20 World Cup 2024.

With only a few days to go for the start of the 9th edition of the T20 World Cup 2024, the Indian team has already arrived in the USA. The BCCI recently shared the official arrival pics, and it gives me goosebumps already. Having won the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup, it feels like an eternity since India last won the tournament.

If we talk about the last two T20 World Cups, India participated the tournament under the leadership of Virat Kohli in 2021 and Rohit Sharma in 2022. Both times India had a good squad, but couldn’t cross the line. While India exited in the Group stage in 2021, it was a semi-final exit got for Team India in 2022.

Having said that, India will once again begin a new campaign with fresh energy under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. A lot has gone through since 2022 for Rohit Sharma, the captain. It was expected Hardik Pandya would lead a young team this World Cup, but only a series before, India made a U-turn, and went back to the experience of Rohit Sharma and and Virat Kohli.

With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli back in the squad, the playing 11 takes a completely new shape from the one that India have been playing for the last 1.5 years. So, with just about a week to go, what’s the ideal playing 11 that Team India shall adopt for T20 World Cup 2024? Well, let’s analyze the current squad, and find out the ideal 11 players that Team India shall adopt.

T20 World Cup 2024 Final Squad List for Team India:

Batters: Rohit Sharma (c), Suryakumar Yadav, Virat Kohli & Yashasvi Jaiswal

Wks: Rishabh Pant & Sanju Samson

All-rounders: Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja & Shivam Dube

Bowlers: Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj & Yuzvendra Chahal

India Team Ideal Playing 11 for T20 World Cup 2024:

Openers – Rohit Sharma & Yashasvi Jaiswal

For most of IPL 2024, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal didn’t have the best of outings, but the duo came back to form right toward the end of the tournament. This will give more confidence to the Indian team to continue with their strongest opening combination of Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal. If not, India could also go with an alternate opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. But that option looks unlikely for now.

Middle-order – Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav & Rishabh Pant (wk)

India have multiple options when it comes to their middle-order with the likes of Sanju Samson vs Rishabh Pant and a possible inclusion of Shivam Dube. It would be an interesting call that Team India will have to make, but if we talk about the ideal playing 11, Virat Kohli at 3, Suryakumar Yadav at 4, and Rishabh Pant at 5 as the primary wicket-keeper seems the best option.

Finishers – Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja & Axar Patel

Coming to the finisher all-rounders, this could be another interesting take from Team India. Either India have to select Yuzvendra Chahal or Mohammed Siraj as the attacking options in the bowling, or they can add batting depth and an extra bowling option in the form of Shivam Dube or Axar Patel. India can take any route, but which one seems the ideal?

Well, selecting an extra bowler is definitely a good thing to do as it strengthens the bowling. But if we look at the philosophy of the Indian team over the year, they have focused more on getting batting depth. In such a scenario, playing Axar Patel or Shivam Dube makes more sense. But from the batting position perspective, Axar Patel or Ravindra Jadeja at 8 seems the most ideal option.

Bowlers – Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah & Arshdeep Singh

Finally, talking about the first-choice ideal bowling combination, India will rely on the trio of Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Arshdeep Singh. While Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah are the best and confirmed in terms of bowlers, India are most likely to select Arshdeep Singh above Mohammed Siraj as the second pace option. India would need their A bowlers, Kudleep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah to have a wonderful tournament.
