India vs Hong Kong’s history in Cricket is inversely proportional to that of an Ashutosh Gowarikar movie. It’s hardly 2 matches – One in 2008 and the other in 2018. Of course, India won both matches, but not before Hong Kong gave a scar in the 2nd match in 2018.
The first match between India vs Hong Kong was in Asia Cup 2008 under the leadership of MS Dhoni. It was the match that saw Team India register their highest team score in Asia Cup, 374/4. MS Dhoni (109) and Suresh Raina (101) struck wonderful centuries in the match. Hong Kong, who were taking baby steps in International cricket were bundled out for just 118 runs. Piyush Chawla registered a match-winning spell of 4/23.
While the first match was a completely one-sided affair, Hong Kong in the second match almost took the flesh out of Lion’s cage. After making a modest 285/7 in the first innings; courtesy of Shikhar Dhawan’s 127 off 120 balls, India didn’t expect what was coming their way in the second innings.
The top order of Hong Kong got the team in an almost winning situation at 175-1 in 35.3 overs. With Hong Kong needing 101 runs from 87 balls, India needed something magical to get them back in the game. Khaleel Ahmed, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Kuldeep Yadav did exactly that. Courtesy their spell of 3/48, 3/46, and 2/42 helped India won the match by 26 runs.
