IPL 2023: Full Retained Players List for Mumbai Indians (MI)

Kieron Pollard released as we look at the retained players best playing 11 for Mumbai Indians (MI) for IPL 2023.

The 5-times IPL champions and the most successful franchise in the history of IPL, the Mumbai Indians retained only 15 players ahead of IPL 2023 Auction. Unlike their previous thought process where they gave a long run to their players, this year was an exception.

Just after the Mega Auction in 2022 where they invested in a lot of players, a 10th finish in the points table has resulted in the team taking drastic measures. They released as many as 13 players from their squad, and most of the releases were around young players who weren’t too costly.

But the main highlight of their retention was Kieron Pollard. He proactively took retirement ahead of IPL 2023, and was then announced as the Batting Coach of the MI team. The 35-year-old started his IPL career in MI in 2010, and is one of the only few players to have played for a single franchise.

Barring him, MI retained a total of 16 players. This includes 3 batters, 2 wicket-keepers, 7 all-rounders, 1 spinner and 3 pacers. The team retained a total of 5 overseas players including the likes of young Dewald Brevis and Tristan Stubbs. So, here’s the list of the full retained squad and players for Mumbai Indians (MI) for IPL 2023.

IPL 2023 – Retained Players Details for Mumbai Indians (MI):

Dewald Brevis (o), Rohit Sharma (C), Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Tristan Stubbs (o), Arjun Tendulkar, Arshad Khan, Hrithik Shokeen, Jofra Archer (o), Ramandeep Singh, Tilak Varma, Tim David (o), Akash Madhwal, Jason Behrendorff (o), Jasprit Bumrah & Kumar Kartikeya

Total Players Retained: 16 // Purse Remaining: INR 20.55 Crores

Analyzing the overall squad, Mumbai Indians have gaps in most of the areas. They need 1-2 good overseas pacers, they need a good Indian/overseas spinner, and they also need 2-3 good Indian batters. They do have all-rounders in quantity, but most of them seem inexperienced. With INR 20.55 crores open, hopefully, they will be able to fill some of the gaps.

Coming to the released players, Mumbai Indians released both their main spinners, Mayank Markande and Murugan Ashwin. From the overseas players’ point of view, MI released all their pacers, Daniel Sams, Tymal Mills, and Riley Meridith. In addition, they released young guns like Aryan Juyal, Anmolpreet Singh, Rahul Buddhi, and Sanjay Yadav.

So, here’s the official released players list for Mumbai Indians (MI) for IPL 2023.

IPL 2023 – Released Players Details for Mumbai Indians (MI):

Anmolpreet Singh, Aryan Juyal, Basil Thampi, Daniel Sams (o), Fabian Allen (o), Jaydev Unadkat, Kieron Pollard (o), Mayank Markande, Murugan Ashwin, Rahul Buddhi, Riley Meredith (o), Sanjay Yadav & Tymal Mills (o)

Total Players Released: 13

Talking about the current best possible 11 based on retained players, MI have a solid top 6. Rohit and Kishan shall open with aggressive Dewald Brevis at number 3. This shall be followed by the World’s number 1 T20 batter Suryakumar Yadav at 4, Tilak Varma at 5, and Tim David at 6.

While the batting is good, all-rounder is an area where MI don’t have good options. Hrithik Shokeen and Jofra Archer seem to be the only decent options. Their bowling seems Archer and Bumrah-centric with decent support from Behrendorff and Kartikeya.
