Team India Full Wicket-Keeper List in T20 World Cup History

MS Dhoni, the undisputed leader as we look at the full wicket-keeper list for Team India in T20 World Cup history.

Ever since the T20 World Cup started in 2007, for almost a decade, if there is one player that has been common throughout, it is MS Dhoni. This is the reason India never got a chance to have a new Captain and also a new wicket-keeper. Whoever captained or kept wickets during this period was all in the absence of MS Dhoni.

With MS Dhoni continuing to dominate for almost a decade, there has been only one wicket-keeper, who has played alongside MS Dhoni as a batter more than a keeper. But what has been the scenario during MS Dhoni’s time and after MS Dhoni’s time? Well, let’s look at the complete wicket-keeper list for Team India in T20 World Cup history from 2007 to 2024.

T20 World Cup Team India Full Wicket-keepers List – 2007 to 2024

T20 World Cup 2007, 2009 & 2010Dinesh Karthik & MS Dhoni

Starting with the T20 World Cup 2007, MS Dhoni not only led the team, but also kept wickets for Team India. But alongside MS Dhoni, the team also had Dinesh Karthik as not only a backup wicket-keeper but also a primary batter in the squad. The same story continued for the 2009 and 2010 T20 World Cup as MS Dhoni led and kept wickets for Team India, and Dinesh Karthik continued to be the backup wicket-keeper.

T20 World Cup 2012, 2014 & 2016 – MS Dhoni

Things finally changed for the next three World Cups until 2016 when India didn’t even feel the need to have a backup wicket-keeper as MS Dhoni was the only wicket-keeper in the squad for Team India.

T20 World Cup 2021 –  KL Rahul & Rishabh Pant

Finally, when MS Dhoni retired in 2019, India had no other option than to select a new wicket-keeper in the squad. With a gap of almost 5 years time between 2016 and the next T20 World Cup in 2021, India had plenty of time to groom a new wicket-keeper. For the successor of MS Dhoni, India opted for Rishabh Pant, who by the time in 2021 had already made a name for himself. In addition to Rishabh Pant, India had KL Rahul as the backup wicket-keeper.

T20 World Cup 2022 – Dinesh Karthik & Rishabh Pant

The 2022 World Cup was played just a year later, and this time also Rishabh Pant led the wicket-keeping duties. However, this time, India went back to Dinesh Karthik, who was also the backup wicket-keeper in the first three World Cups. Unfortunately, Dinesh Karthik once again played the role of backup wicket-keeper with Pant being the preferred choice.

T20 World Cup 2024 – Rishabh Pant & Sanju Samson

Finally, coming to the latest edition of the T20 World Cup, Rishabh Pant made a hat-trick of selection showcasing his need and importance in the Indian team. This is after Pant didn’t play a single International match for more than a year due to the accident he had a year back. With Pant as the leading keeper, Sanju Samson has been chosen as the backup keeper in the squad.
