Team India All Spinners List in T20 World Cup – 2007 to 2024
Yuvraj Singh represented the most number of times as we look at the full official spinners list for Team India in the T20 World Cup from 2007 to 2024.
India as a country is known for spinners! So, be it the ODI World Cup, World Test Championship, or T20 World Cup, Team India mostly relies on their spinners more than pacers. While Jasprit Bumrah, the undisputed pacer king has been changing this perception, it is the spinners like Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Harbhajan Singh, etc, that have always been the focus.
The 2024 T20 World Cup begins in a month, and Team India recently announced the official 15-member squad. It’s a very interesting squad that Team India have selected with as many as four frontline spinners in the squad. With spinners in focus this T20 World Cup, how have they been in the Indian team in all tournaments? Well, let’s find out the spinners list for Team India in T20 World Cup from 2007 to 2024.
T20 World Cup Team India Full Spinners List – 2007 to 2024
T20 World Cup 2007
Piyush Chawla, Yusuf Pathan, Yuvraj Singh & Harbhajan Singh
The first-ever T20 World Cup played in 2007 saw India selecting four spinners in the squad. Given the South African pace-friendly conditions, India still selected two proper spinners in the squad in the form of Piyush Chawla and Harbhajan Singh. Other than these two, India had Yusuf Pathan and Yuvraj Singh as the spin all-rounders in the squad.
T20 World Cup 2009
Ravindra Jadeja, Yusuf Pathan, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh & Pragyan Ojha
The 2nd T20 World Cup from 2009 was played in similar conditions as that of South Africa in England. But India didn’t alter their strategy as they went a step ahead with 5 spinners this time. While three from the previous T20 World Cup, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, and Yusuf Pathan made the cut, India added two new bowlers in the form of Ravindra Jadeja and Pragyan Ojha. This felt like a surprising strategy with three left-arm spinners in place.
T20 World Cup 2010
Piyush Chawla, Ravindra Jadeja, Yusuf Pathan, Yuvraj Singh & Harbhajan Singh
In the third T20 World Cup in 2010, India went to West Indies, which offered conditions that assisted spin. India repeated four spinners from the 2009 T20 World Cup in the form of Ravindra Jadeja, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, and Yusuf Pathan. But added a wrist spinner Piyush Chawla in place of Pragyan Ojha, thus going ahead with a more variety in spin bowling.
T20 World Cup 2012
Piyush Chawla, Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuvraj Singh & Harbhajan Singh
The fourth T20 World Cup was the first to be played in the sub-continent with Sri Lanka as the hosts. India, unlike previous T20 World Cups, looked light on spin with only four spinners being included. However, this time around, India had three proper spinners in the form of Ravichandran Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh, and Piyush Chawla in addition to Yuvraj Singh, the spin all-rounder.
T20 World Cup 2014
Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja & Yuvraj Singh
Another T20 World Cup in the sub-continent with Bangladesh being the hosts this time. Even as the World Cup was being played in the most spin-friendly conditions of all countries, India went ahead with only three spinners. Ravichandran Ashwin once again led the spin bowling attack for India with support from Ravindra Jadeja and Yuvraj Singh. This was Yuvraj’s fifth and last T20 World Cup in succession.
T20 World Cup 2016
Pawan Negi, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja & Harbhajan Singh
Coming to the first T20 World Cup that was played in India in 2016, Team India selected 4 spinners in the squad with the return of the veteran Harbhajan Singh. Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja continued from the previous T20 World Cup. However, the Indian team added Pawan Negi as a substitute for Yuvraj Singh, who was ruled out of the tournament due to injury.
T20 World Cup 2021
Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Rahul Chahar & Varun Chakravarthy
Finally, after a gap of almost 5 years – the longest in T20 World Cup history, the T20 World Cup was brought back to life, but in UAE. India were supposed to host the tournament in 2020, but Covid forced the World Cup a year later in UAE. India surprised everyone with the spinners as Varun Chakravarthy and Rahul Chahar were the leading spinners in the squad with support from Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin.
T20 World Cup 2022
Axar Patel, Deepak Hooda, Ravichandran Ashwin & Yuzvendra Chahal
Talking about the last T20 World Cup that was played in Australia, India once again selected 4 spinners in the squad. But this time it was Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal leading the spin attack with support from spin all-rounders Axar Patel and Deepak Hooda. It finally felt like one of India’s best spinners, Yuzvendra Chahal would get a chance to play. But unfortunately, Chahal didn’t feature in any of the matches.
T20 World Cup 2024
Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav & Yuzvendra Chahal
Coming to the latest T20 World Cup, India have selected a total of four spinners in the squad. While Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja are spin all-rounders in the squad, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal are the main spinners in the squad. Rohit Sharma gave technical reasons while selecting four spinners in the squad. With most of the matches scheduled in the afternoon, what Rohit says can actually make a lot of sense. But we will have to wait and watch to see how it actually turns out.
So, that’s about the final spinners list for Team India from T20 World Cup 2007 to 2024. It would be very nice to see the KulCha combo dominate the bowling as they did in the 2017-18 period. The role of Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja shall be important too as spin all-rounders.
