RR Script History with Top 5 Highest Successful Run chase in IPL

Jos Buttler leads RR to achieve the highest successful run chase in the history of the Indian Premier League with their innings vs KKR in IPL 2024.

Year-on-year, T20 cricket is witnessing some epic drama and action. T20 is one of the most dynamic formats, and when it comes to tournaments, the Indian Premier League is at the pinnacle of the cricketing world. The IPL is never short of excitement, and the year 2024 has already seen innumerable records. So, be it the record of hitting the most sixes or scoring the most runs in an innings, we have seen it all.

One such record that is broken almost every year in the Indian Premier League is the highest successful run chase. The record that was started in 2008 took almost 12 years before anyone surpassed it. While that record was broken in 2020 by the same team, Rajasthan Royals, it was broken again in 2024. So, how about we look at the top 5 highest successful run chase in the history of IPL?

#5: Mumbai Indians vs PBKS in IPL 2023 – 216/4

At number 5, we have the Mumbai Indians, who in 2023 made their highest successful run chase in the history of IPL. Chasing 215, MI needed the win desperately to stay in the Playoffs race. Unfortunately, MI lost their captain Rohit Sharma for a duck. While Cameron Green got the start scoring 23 off 18 balls, it wasn’t enough, and it was all onto Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav to take MI to a successful run chase.

With Mumbai Indians 54/2 in 6 overs, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav blasted their way to quickfire fifties. While Ishan Kishan scored 75 off 41 balls, Suryakumar Yadav was more aggressive with his score reading 66 off 31 balls. Unfortunately, both got out in the 16th over, but with 38 needing of last 4 overs, the target was almost within reach of the Mumbai Indians. Tilak Varma then smashed an aggressive 26 off 10 balls to take MI home in just 18.5 overs.

#4: Sunrisers Hyderabad vs RR in IPL 2023 – 217/6

At number 4, we have the Sunrisers Hyderabad team, who in the same year 2023 led a stunning run chase against Rajasthan Royals. Be it while chasing and winning or defending or losing, RR find themselves for the third time in this list. After RR scored a stunning 214/2 in 20 overs, SRH saw an almost equal contribution from all their players. Almost everyone contributed to the winning cause, but it was Glenn Phillip’s 25 off 7 balls that changed the game when RR needed 41 off 12 balls.

#3: Mumbai Indians vs CSK in IPL 2021 – 219/6

At number 3, we once again have the Mumbai Indians team, who were outstanding in the 2021 El-Clasico clash. El-Clasico in IPL is the clash between MI and CSK, and it is actually the mother of all cricket matches in the IPL. After giving a target of 219 to MI, you usually expect CSK to win this comfortably. But MI had other ideas as CSK were witness to the Pollard storm.

It is no secret that Chennai Super Kings is the favorite opponent for Kieron Pollard, and in his last days in the IPL, he proved the same. Pollard walked in the match with MI needing 138 in 10 overs. The task looked almost impossible. But Pollard with his brutal power scored 87 off 34 balls including 8 gigantic sixes helped MI achieve the target on the last ball of the innings.

#2: Rajasthan Royals vs PBKS in IPL 2020 – 226/6

Second on the list is the record that was for almost 4 years, and was only broken in 2024 by the same team. It is the Rajasthan Royals team that smashed the previous highest successful run chase in the history of IPL. Chasing a gigantic 224 with two closest rivals in the IPL, Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals, the RR team left no stone unturned in the chase.

This was the match that felt like the destiny of Rahul Tewatia, the finisher. After Sanju Samson made 85 off 42 balls, RR still needed 65 off 23 balls. This is when Rahul Tewatia was struggling big time to time the ball. Tewatia was batting on 23 off 17 balls, and from there he smashed Sheldon Cottrell for five mighty sixes in an over. It was a wow moment for RR as the team smashed three more sixes in the 19th over to finish the match in 19.3 overs.

#1: Rajasthan Royals vs KKR in IPL 2024 – 224/8

The latest of the lot once again comes from Rajasthan Royals as they script history by equalling their own record of the highest successful run chase in IPL history with their stunning innings vs KKR in 2024. After conceding 223 runs in 20 overs, RR, who have been doing pretty well in this IPL needed someone to step up in this steep run chase. While it has been all middle-order for RR this season, it was Jos Buttler’s time to price all critics wrong.

Chasing 224, RR never looked in the game while chasing such a big score. With wickets tumbling at one end, RR were 121/6 at one stage in 13 overs with Jos Buttler batting at 37 off 28 balls. With 96 needed of the last 6 overs, the game almost felt impossible for RR to reach, but Jos the Boss had different ideas. He smashed 70 of those 96 runs while facing only 32 balls to let RR win the match in the final over.
