India vs WI 2023: Official ODI Series Squad and Players List

A total of 17 players make the cut as we look at the confirmed official squad and players list for the 2023 India vs WI ODI series. 

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially announced the Team India squad for the ODI series vs West Indies. A total of 17 players make the cut in what can be called a slightly revamped squad compared to what we had seen in the ODI series vs Australia. 

Notably, no player has been dropped from the team. However, the team is missing many key players due to injury concerns. From the injured players, there’s Middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer, wicket-keepers Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul, and Pacer Jasprit Bumrah. In addition, Mohammed Shami has been rested owing to a hectic schedule. 

Key Changes: 

Team India have done some key chances in the squad to fill up the injured player’s position. Compared to the previous ODI squad that played against Australia, Sanju Samson replaces KL Rahul as the wicket-keeper batter in the squad. Whereas Ruturaj Gaikwad fills up for Shreyas Iyer. It would be interesting to see if India are considering Ruturaj in the middle-order or as a backup opener. 

In the bowling department, Mukesh Kumar makes the cut in place of Mohammed Shami. Mukesh is also a part of the Indian Test team, so it means the Indian team is backing him as the bowler to watch out for. Additionally, Washington Sundar misses out as he hasn’t fully recovered from the injury. 

From the players who were under scrutiny, they have been given another lifeline. SKY for example had three ducks against Australia in as many matches, but has been selected owing to his potential. Whereas Umran Malik, who had a below-par IPL has been given a go too. 

Overall, Team India have selected 5 batters, 2 wicket-keepers, 3 all-rounders, and 7 bowlers in the squad. Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep shall lead the spin duties and Mohammed Siraj shall lead the pace duties for India. Whereas Ishan Kishan remains India’s first-choice keeper for now.

Batters: Rohit Sharma, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav & Virat Kohli

WKs: Ishan Kishan & Sanju Samson

All-rounders: Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya & Ravindra Jadeja

Bowlers: Jaydev Unadkat, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Shardul Thakur, Umran Malik & Yuzvendra Chahal

So, that’s about the official schedule for Team India for the ODI series vs West Indies. This would be Team India’s first assignment after IPL in the 50-over format, and will act as a stepping stone for the ODI World Cup 2023. The new players to look out for in the ODI series include Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson, Jaydev Unadkat, Mukesh Kumar, and Umran Malik.
