Asia Cup 2023: Team India Official Final Squad and Players List

Rohit Sharma set to lead a 17-member squad as we look at the confirmed official players list for Team India for Asia Cup 2023.  

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced the squad for the much-awaited tournament, Asia Cup 2023. The Ajit Agarked-led selection committee along with Team India’s Captain Rohit Sharma shared the squad details via a press conference in Delhi.

The BCCI has selected a 17-member squad, which will be led by Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya as his deputy. Overall, the selected squad seems promising from all areas with the inclusion of 6 batters, 2 wicket-keepers, 3 all-rounders, 1 primary spinner, and 5 pacers. 

Great news for Team India is that 4 players, who had been recovering from injuries are all a part of Team India’s squad for Asia Cup 2023. The likes of which include middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer, wicket-keeper KL Rahul, and pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna.

Squad Breakdown:

Breaking down the squad, Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, and Ishan Kishan are the first-choice openers in the squad. Whereas middle-order shall depend on Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma. Tilak Varma receives a maiden call-up owing to superb temperament and a part-time bowling option.

The all-rounder duties shall rely on Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya, and Ravindra Jadeja. Whereas the bowling duties shall rely on spinner Kuldeep Yadav, and pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Shardul Thakur. Importantly, India have selected a combo of 3 spinners and 6 pacers.

Batters: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma & Virat Kohli

WKs: Ishan Kishan & KL Rahul

All-rounders: Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya & Ravindra Jadeja

Bowlers: Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna & Shardul Thakur

From the key omissions point of view, Team India have left out Yuzvendra Chahal, and preference has been given to a fifth pacer. Similarly, with the return of Shreyas Iyer and wicket-keeper KL Rahul, Sanju Samson too has been omitted from the squad, and is kept in travelling backups.    

So, that’s about the official squad details for Team India for Asia Cup 2023. Overall, the squad looks solid with key players in all areas. However, a couple of surprising calls like the inclusion of Tilak Varma and the exclusion of Yuzvendra Chahal seem interesting. While Tilak is still taking baby steps in International cricket, Yuzi Chahal’s le spin could be a big miss.
